Feeding a Venus Flytrap Broccoli and Other Plant-Based Foods

Have we gone crazy? Well, yeah, but that happened years ago. We were always bemused by the idea of a plant-eating a plant. For example, what would happen if you fed a Venus flytrap broccoli? Would the flytrap break it down, or would it reopen a day later and spit it out? And can a carnivorous plant get its nutrients (AKA fertilizer) from plants? We love questions like that! So, down the rabbit ...

    very well done. I am outdoor grower in VFT's native north carolina. I was concerned about the plant medium (peat moss & perlite) freezing in the pot and killing the plant during dormancy. If that 2013 plant can freeze and make it through PNW winter, I feel confident my plants will do well here.

    These monthly care videos are awesome! They're really helpful and have prepared me in terms of what to expect. I have a quick question about repotting/dividing VFTs and Sarracenias though. I understand this is best done in early spring when the plants are just waking up, but I have a VFT that I have somewhat neglected for a while and is outgrowing it's pot. What harm would there be in repotting and dividing now before it gets colder and before the plants start to go dormant?

    Thanks so much for the video it really helped!! Greece's sun is like the sun from a desert nowadays ( it wasnt like that few years ago). The plants were not doing well, a lot of discoloration, especially on the flytraps and the sarracenias. Imagine a rubricorpora losing its color and become green. I think high UV's destroying the color of the plants along with high temperatures. So i have a question, a shade cloth or polyethylene-polycarbonate (lots of carnivorous plants owners grow them in these greenhouses) that blocks full UV's spectrum is better for greenhouse glazing material for our plants. Most flower greenhouses allow a percent of UV ( UVA) to color their flowers (UV makes the plant to produce anthocyanins and do secondary metabolism), what about the carnivorous plants??

    • @SarraceniaNorthwest

      Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you found the video helpful. I'm curious about rubricorpora losing color. It wasn't the experience with our employee who was featured in that video. Whent that plant loses color, it's because it was heavily shaded or the soil wasn't correct (perhaps, not acidic enough). 30-40% shade cloth is sufficient in desert situations.

    • @CarnivorPlant
      @CarnivorPlant 8 днів тому

      @@SarraceniaNorthwest Thanks for the reply!! So the rubricorpora was taking 6 or 8 hour of direct sun midday sun. The soil was peat and perlite, fully acidic. The same soil goes to my spittacinas, they also take the same amount of sunlight. The psittacinas on the other hand loved the heat and the burning sun, not even a sunburn or discoloration, The flavas and venus flytraps like B52 or dcxl lose their full color, and their vigorus growth and became green.. In spring everything is perfect but in the sunmmer everything starts to decline exept psittacinas and some sub-tropical sundews.

    What is the substitute for perlite??

    • @SarraceniaNorthwest
      @SarraceniaNorthwest 17 днів тому

      Thank you for watching. You can use silica sand, river sand, or pumice.

  • @Jipswiftly
    @Jipswiftly 25 днів тому

    Perlite is volcanic in origin and has a large percentage of pore space due to gases being evolved from the magma during eruption. The light color is an indication of the chemical composition. Light colored igneous rocks are referred to as "felsic" and contain high percentages of silica (more than 65%). Metal ions include mostly sodium and potassium which do not contribute to alkalinity. Felsic rocks are also referred to as "acidic" igneous rocks because when they weather they generate acidity. If you use dark colored scoria, which has similar pore space like perlite, you could potentially add alkalinity when it weathers because it is a mafic igneous rock (often referred to as "basic" igneous rock). Basic igneous rock has lower silica content and higher magnesium and calcium content. As the name suggests, basic igneous rocks (dark black and green) generate alkalinity when they weather.

  • @Jipswiftly
    @Jipswiftly 25 днів тому

    Perlite is porous but not permeable. Adding small amounts of perlite is adding impermeable material without increasing porosity. I agree with your explanation of the higher concentration of perlite. The higher percentage of perlite increases the chance of grain to grain contact creating greater pore networks resulting in greater permeability. Nice video and experiment.

  • @Jipswiftly
    @Jipswiftly 25 днів тому

    If you are unsure of the composition of your gravel, and you are trying to avoid marble/limestone which will drive up the pH, a simple test is to place some of it in vinegar. If you see small bubbles forming around the pebbles that is an indication that you have marble/limestone and you should avoid using it.

    Any update on that experiment video? I live in a zone 4A, so having my carnys outside in the summer is great at 25-34c however winters can snap down to -40c so I tend to have a mix of indoor growlights supplementing outside patio direct sunlight. It can be hard to find information that doesn't contradict the last thing you read! I currently have 4 Sunblaster white LED growlights set up next to a large west facing window.

    • @SarraceniaNorthwest
      @SarraceniaNorthwest 26 днів тому

      Thanks for watching. We hit a snag with the video. We have had to restart the experiment. I'm not certain when the a complete video to share. Sometimes, you just have to run your own experiments to see what works for your particular microclimate. If you're satisfied with how your plants are growing, then stick to what you're doing. If it looks like the plants need more light intensity, then move the light source closer or use a different setup. If the plants are burning or getting bleached, move the lights further away or change the daylight hours. That's pretty much the gist of working with artificial lights.

      Thank you for watching the video! Lack of proper sunlight is the number one cause of death for these plants, so definitely set them outside, even in a tropical climate. However, it's always best to grow plants suitable to your growing conditions. If you want to grow flytraps in a tropical climate, you may need to accept that they will live for a year, at the most. That's just the nature of cold hardy perennials if they don't have a cold winter dormancy. There are numerous tropical carnivorous plants that would thrive for you, such as Nepenthes, Mexican butterworts, and tropical sundews. I encourage you to consider growing these plants, instead. You will be much happier with the results.
